Ladakh

Set deep in the Indian Himalayas on the western edge of the Tibetan plateau, Ladakh, or 'Little Tibet', is one of the highest and driest inhabited places on earth. In 2000 I travelled to Ladakh and particapted in the Ladakh Farm Project run by the International Society for Ecology and Culture. For two months I lived and worked with a family in the village of Hemis Shukpa Chen. Here I witnessed how, in the course of a generation, conventional development and globalization policies have made a significant impact on individuals and communities. I also gained first hand experience in a way-of-life still close to the land and of a culture still deeply rooted in family and community connections.
